Milton Keynes Lifestyle Photographer

What is a Lifestyle Photographer?
Lifestyle photography is a fairly new concept that’s become more popular in recent years. It’s an approach that, like photojournalism, focuses on honest imagery and real moments whilst adding beautiful lighting and subtle posing that’s reminiscent of traditional portraiture. As a lifestyle photographer based in Milton Keynes, the aim is always to capture the art of the everyday in a visually appealing way.

Documenting Real Life

Although a lifestyle photographer’s objective is to document authentic moments as they unfold, it doesn’t involve adopting a purely documentary approach. Photojournalists primarily take candid pictures whereas I prefer to have a bit more involvement in the shoot. Whether it’s a few snaps of your home, a pre-session visit to a local park or a look around Google Maps, I’ll assess the location before the shoot to determine the best spots for photos. I’m always looking for beautiful areas of natural light and uncluttered or interesting backdrops to set the scene for the session.

Natural Family Portrait Photography
When it comes to lifestyle photography, awkward poses are always best avoided but I do give a little direction when needed. Instead of guiding you into a fixed pose, I might give you a few actions to do – e.g. look at baby or move your hair back a little…nothing too cringey! This helps you to feel more comfortable in front of the camera and adding movement gives the images a more natural feel. There’s nothing worse than trying to hold a smile whilst looking at the camera!

FLYING A KITE

This is a great activity for older kids who like to be outdoor. It's important to find the right location - Ivinghoe Beacon in Buckinghamshire and Campbell Park in Milton Keynes are great spots.

MAKING SANDCASTLES

Unfortunately, there aren't too many beaches around Milton Keynes but if you like the idea of having a shoot on holiday, I'm happy to travel. British summers don't always bring bright blue skies and sunshine but I'm always willing to postpone and hold out for a beautiful sunset.

PLAYGROUNDS

Playgrounds are a great place to photograph toddlers and young children having fun and being themselves. There are so many great playgrounds in the Buckinghamshire area but I'd recommend picking one that's familiar to you and your kids. When looking back at your photos, seeing a favourite slide or remembering the swing your little one would never want to stop playing on, takes you right back to how it feels to have young children.

BUBBLES

I'm yet to meet a child who doesn't love bubbles! It's especially helpful for keeping toddlers and younger kids in the same spot - really useful for sitting siblings together. It's also a great way to bring out some lovely natural expressions, giggles and smiles.

PILLOW FIGHT

Finding an indoor activity where kids can let loose can be tricky but pillow fights work really well - especially when trying to get fun pictures of kids together. You can even cut a corner off a feather pillow to get the full effect.

FEEDING THE DUCKS

When planning a photo shoot in the park, it's a good idea to bring some food along for the ducks. It's another great way of keeping kids in a particular spot and gives the images a more natural feel.

BIKE RIDE

You're always welcome to bring bikes and scooters to a portrait session. It's a great way to capture movement in the photos and, more importantly, make children forget the camera is there so I'm able to capture their true personalities.

ARCADES

If you've got older children, arcades or bowling alleys are a great location for a family portrait session. They often have lots of coloured lights and interesting reflections which make for some creative photos.

BATHTIME

If you're struggling to think of an activity for a baby or toddler, sticking to your usual daily routine can help. Young children love the little rituals that make up the day to day so, if your little one always looks forward to bath time, let's make it a part of your photo shoot - don't forget the bubble bath!
